First Act Band

What are the objectives of the band?

  • To be open to musicians of all abilities and ages
  • To provide experience of rehearsing with a band, playing in concerts and playing for shows
  • To perform several concerts a year both at the Jubilee Theatre and other venues
  • To play for musicals productions by First Act and Second Act Theatres – normally one each year
  • To provide opportunities for players to develop their own musical skills, e.g.:
    • performing solos or working with small ensembles
    • conducting
    • choosing repertoire
    • transposing orchestral parts
    • orchestrating pieces
    • composing new works
    • organising concerts

What sort of music do we play?

We play a wide variety of music, including classical, musical theatre and modern. We will play some pieces as a large group and some pieces in small ensembles.

Members are encouraged to participate in choosing repertoire, and the repertoire will be balanced to gain maximum potential from the varying abilities within the band.

How often do we rehearse?

We hold one rehearsal per week outside of the normal holiday periods - usually on a Sunday - but smaller ensemble groups may rehearse more often.
